Process & Maintenance

  1. Prepare the ground: Start by clearing the area of any debris, rocks, or existing vegetation. Ensure that the soil is level and free from any large bumps or depressions. It's also a good idea to loosen the topsoil with a rake or garden fork.
  2. Measure and order sod: Measure the area to determine the amount of sod needed. Consider adding a little extra to account for any cutting or shaping required. Order the sod from a reputable supplier and schedule the delivery for the day of installation.
  3. Start laying the sod: Begin by laying the first row of sod along a straight edge, such as a sidewalk or driveway. Unroll the sod, making sure the edges are tightly fitted together without overlapping. Avoid stretching or pulling the sod, as it may cause it to shrink later.
  4. Stagger the sod: For subsequent rows, stagger the joints, similar to how bricks are laid. This will help create a more stable and seamless lawn. Use a sharp knife or sod cutter to trim pieces as needed to fit irregular shapes or edges.
  5. Press and level: After laying each piece of sod, gently press it down to ensure good soil-to-sod contact. This will help the roots establish faster. Use a lawn roller or simply walk on the sod while wearing flat-soled shoes to ensure even contact and eliminate any air pockets.
  6. Water and maintain: Immediately after laying the sod, water it thoroughly. Aim to wet the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. Keep the sod consistently moist for the first few weeks until the roots have firmly established. Watering frequency may vary depending on weather conditions, but typically watering once or twice a day is recommended.
  7. Avoid walking on and mowing the sod: Minimize foot traffic on the newly laid sod for the first few weeks to allow it to take root. This will help prevent damage and ensure a healthier, more even lawn.
  8. Fertilize (Optional) and mow: After about 4-6 weeks, apply a slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients for the sod. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for the appropriate application rates. Once the sod has established well and rooted itself, you can start mowing, ensuring not to remove more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.
  9. Maintain regular care: To keep your sod looking its best, maintain regular care practices such as proper watering, fertilizing, and mowing. Follow a consistent lawn maintenance schedule and address any issues promptly, such as pests or diseases.

The Importance of Watering Your Sod

Watering sod is crucial for its successful establishment and long-term health and that bright green colour we all love. Here are the key reasons why watering sod is important:
  1. Root establishment: Proper watering is vital during the initial period after laying sod. Water helps the roots make contact with the soil beneath and encourages them to grow and penetrate deeper. Sufficient moisture enables the roots to anchor the sod firmly, leading to a stronger and more stable lawn.
  2. Hydration: Sod is typically harvested and transported to its installation site, causing some stress to the grass. Watering immediately after laying the sod helps replenish moisture lost during transportation and installation. It ensures that the grass remains hydrated, preventing it from drying out and improving its chances of survival.
  3. Nutrient absorption: Water is a carrier for essential nutrients present in the soil. Adequate watering allows the roots to absorb these nutrients, supporting healthy growth and development of the sod. Without proper hydration, the roots may struggle to access the nutrients they need, resulting in poor overall health and appearance of the lawn.
  4. Heat protection: Newly laid sod is particularly vulnerable to heat stress, especially during hot and dry weather conditions. Watering provides a cooling effect on the sod, shielding it from excessive heat and preventing the grass from wilting or burning. It helps maintain a favorable microclimate for the sod to thrive and reduces the risk of heat-related damage.
  5. Moisture balance: Sod requires a delicate balance of moisture in the soil to flourish. Inadequate watering can lead to dry and compacted soil, hindering root growth and nutrient uptake. Conversely, overwatering can drown the roots, promoting shallow root growth and creating a favorable environment for diseases and pests. Proper watering practices maintain the optimal moisture balance, ensuring the sod receives adequate hydration without excessive saturation.
  6. Establishment success: The first few weeks after laying sod are critical for its establishment. Consistent and appropriate watering during this period significantly improves the chances of successful root development and integration into the soil. It helps the sod recover from the transplantation shock, enabling it to take root, establish a strong foundation, and grow into a lush and healthy lawn.
Remember, the specific watering requirements may vary depending on factors such as the sod type, local climate, and soil conditions. It's essential to follow watering guidelines provided by the sod supplier or consult with a professional landscaper to determine the optimal watering schedule and duration for your specific sod installation.
